Nicholas Byard

UK comedian Nick Byard in a brown jacket and clear-frame glasses, laughing mid-set at a comedy show London, reddish hair and light stubble catching the studio lighting as he holds a microphone against a clean neutral background.

There are not many comedians on the UK circuit who have built their own comedy infrastructure while simultaneously developing as a performer within it. Nick Byard is one of them. The founder and director of Mates Rates Comedy Club, a growing operation with shows across London, Oxford, and Reading, and director of the Reading Indie Comedy Festival, which guarantees a fee to every artist it books, Nick brings the perspective of someone who understands the comedy business from both sides of the curtain. What makes him interesting on stage is that this perspective feeds directly into the material: leftist, gag-slinging, and unapologetically club-style.

His stand-up is built around tightly written jokes and acerbic wit, delivered with a directness that works equally well in front of audiences who share his politics and those who do not. He placed runner-up in the Chester New Comedian of the Year 2022 and has won the gong at Vauxhall Comedy Club, both circuit credentials that speak to a comedian with the material and the stage presence to hold a room across varied lineups. Reading Today noted "a confident set by Nick Byard, including sharp skits about being the alpha male through the choice of a leather jacket." Comedian Jonathan Elston has described him as having "an endearing stage presence and a nice turn of phrase," adding that he would recommend him for middle spots.

Nick is also the host of The Sunday Morning Writing Session, a podcast in which he interviews comedians and other creative practitioners about the process behind the work. He performs regularly at George Street Comedy Club in Oxford and across the broader UK circuit, as well as testing new material at Mates Rates Comedy Raw in Reading.
