Archie Maddocks

Comedian Archie Maddocks in a studio headshot, seated on a wooden stool. Brown woven fedora with dark band, blue denim overshirt over grey t-shirt. One hand raised to his temple, knowing expression. Soft pink backdrop.

A stand-up comedian, writer, and Olivier Award-nominated playwright whose career spans the comedy circuit, the Edinburgh Fringe, BBC writing rooms, Channel 4's television development programme, and some of the most prestigious theatre stages in London. His 2021 play "A Place For We" — set in a West Indian funeral parlour in Brixton — was shortlisted for the Bruntwood Prize from a submission pile of nearly 2,000, shortlisted for the Alfred Fagon Award, staged at the Park Theatre, and nominated for an Olivier Award 2022. His work has been produced at the Bush Theatre, Lyric Hammersmith, Orange Tree Theatre, and the Royal Court in London, as well as in New York at the New Light Theatre.

As a stand-up, his warm energy, natural stage presence, and quick wit have taken him from the biggest comedy clubs in the UK to South Africa and the USA. He won the Bath New Act of the Year 2014, was a finalist in both the New Acts of the Year and the English Comedian of the Year, and was runner-up in the Amused Moose Laugh Off. He has performed three solo shows at the Edinburgh Fringe — "Shirts Vs Skins" (2016), "IlluminArchie" (2017), and "Matchstick" (2018, now streaming on NextUp) — all to four-star reviews. He has also appeared on Comedy Central's Guessable?

Bruce Dessau of Beyond The Joke and the Evening Standard called him "a super cool, super smart storyteller." Broadway Baby said he is "poignant, inventive and razor sharp." Entertainment Focus called him "a brilliant job balancing light silly humour with thought-provoking, refreshing and subversive social discussion."
